Beginner Violin Lessons for Adults, Online
Beginner violin lessons for adults do not assume that you already know how to hold the violin, read music or make a beautiful sound. That is what the lessons are for.
No experience needed · No music reading required · English or German · Flexible schedulingNo fixed weekly slot required.
Starting from zero is allowed
"Am I too old?"
You are not. What matters far more than the age at which you begin is how you learn once you do. Adults arrive with musical taste, questions, and a clear reason for wanting the violin.
"Worried about your sound?"
There is nothing to hide from me. The first sounds are useful precisely because they tell us what is happening. Those are not failures. They are things we can observe and change.
"Cannot read music?"
That is fine. Reading music, holding the violin, using the bow and listening critically can all be learned. We introduce each piece of information when you have something practical to do with it.
Your first lesson
Arrive as you are
Whether that is taking the violin out of its case together or making sense of a few weeks of self-experiment.
Change one thing
We find one useful starting point and stay with it long enough for you to recognise the difference yourself.
Leave knowing what to do
You leave knowing what changed, why it changed, and what you can try on your own afterwards.
No preparation. No commitment to another lesson. The first lesson stands on its own.
Playing a year now, still a beginner really. The Baroque bow hold was the thing that finally made the flexibility in my right hand click. Big thing for me: it sorted out the cramps I always used to get. Cannot tell you what a relief that is.
Desiree G., 60 · Adult beginner, ViennaHow I teach adult beginners
Understand the difficulty
The aim is not to make the violin artificially easy. It is a difficult instrument. The aim is to make the difficulty understandable, so you know what you are trying to change when you practise.
One change at a time
A complete beginner does not need twenty instructions at once. A lesson settles on one clear priority rather than repeating something twenty times and hoping one repetition works.
Learn to hear for yourself
My teaching is built around observation and independence, so that little by little you can tell for yourself whether a sound is right, and reproduce the change when you practise alone.
What you need to start
No violin yet? Write to me before booking and I can help you work out what to look for in a rental or beginner instrument. Lessons take place on Zoom in English or German. Because I cannot simply move your hands into place, I help you see, hear and understand what changes, which makes it easier to reproduce when you practise alone.
Who you are learning with
I am Léna Ruisz, a violinist and teacher based in Basel with a Master's in Music Pedagogy from the University of Music Basel / FHNW. For a beginner, that pedagogy training matters as much as any performance credential: playing well and teaching someone their first movement are not the same skill. I also perform internationally and hold 1st Prize at the 2025 International Telemann Competition. I am a baroque violinist too, though you need no interest in that to study here.
Questions before you begin
Do I need a violin before my first lesson?
If you already have a playable violin, use that. You do not need an expensive instrument or a special setup. If you do not yet have one, write to me before booking and I can help you understand what to look for in a rental or beginner instrument.
What if I have no musical experience and cannot read music?
That is fine. Reading music, holding the violin, using the bow and listening critically can all be learned. You do not have to acquire them before lessons begin; we introduce each piece of information when you have something practical to do with it.
How often do I need to take lessons?
There is no fixed weekly slot. Many adults book weekly or fortnightly, while others arrange lessons around work, travel and busy periods. We can find a rhythm that gives you enough time to practise without making lessons another obligation.
You do not have to decide whether violin will be part of your life for five years. Start with one lesson.
